Calendula is one of the oldest plants known to herbal medicine and can be infused in oils, incorporated into lotions, creams, balms, and brighten herbal tea blends.

Calendula is associated with the sun and the fire element making it a well-known and uplifting herb. It has been used topically, ceremonially, as a dye, and food for centuries. Used in medieval Europe, as “poor man’s saffron” to add color and spice various foods. It has been historically used throughout the world including ancient times in India, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and North American indigenous cultures for healing. Doctors in the American Civil War carried dried calendula petals in their pockets to curb bleeding and promote healing when treating war wounds.

Calendula has been highly researched for it’s anti-inflammatory properties and has been used to help heal minor wounds, soothe bee stings and cool inflamed skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis, assist with digestion and immune systems, hydrates and nourishes dry skin, slows development of wrinkles and reduces scarring.

Magically Calendula was believed to have powers of protection and clairvoyance. String the flowers above doorways to help keep away evil.  Put under the bed to protection while sleeping and from robbers. Some other magickal uses include love, stability, consecration, legal matters, and spiritual growth.

Precautions

Persons with allergies to other members of the Asteraceae family (such as feverfew, chamomile, or Echinacea species) should exercise caution with calendula, as allergic cross-reactivity to Asteraceae plants is common.
